ESC1: Humble and Silly Beginnings
The Ghetto All-Stars won the inaugural game by the score of 23-16. It remains to be the highest scoring game in End of Summer Classic history. The Ghetto's 23 runs is the most runs scored by the franchise in a single game.
The game was scheduled to be played at the field near Stuyvesant High School. Upon arrival to the field on that Labor Day Sunday, the participants discovered it was taped off. The security guard, hiding in the trees, claimed they were waiting for the grass to complete its development after being sprayed, or something dumb like that. After Wilson led a mini revolt on the one security guard by cutting off parts of the yellow tape and getting people to play catch with him on the grass, the players all took a bus to FDR Field. FDR is far away, but has lights, and car crashes nearby.
The game was full of offense, offensiveness and innocent dumb humor. There was soda consumption while circling the bases, footballs brought for the sole purpose of spiking them after reaching a base, car crashes that Wilson would at first mistake for someone yelling at the teams to stop playing, a police officer watching the game, the police officer witnessing a fight, Roger being told it was staged and Roger asking the police officer why he wasn't given assistance. Mike Stern volunteered to umpire and since no one remembers how he did he must have done a good job. The game ended with Lawrence, aka The Law, striking out.
Scott would later reveal he was originally supposed to participate in the game, but on his subway trip to the field he hit his head on a subway stairwell ceiling and needed to be hospitalized.
Three days later the participants returned to class to begin their senior year of high school.
