Things to Note While Luxuriating in Balmy 50 Degree Weather
-The 2010 MLB season ended on November 1, 2010. We played baseball on November 6, 2010. Suck it, MLB.
-For only the 4th time in our league's history, the game was won on a walk-off. With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th, Jason Blair hit a single that deflected off the third baseman's glove into left, scoring Vicki.
-Alvin, who had left to drop Harris off at the train, came running into the celebration screaming, "WHAT HAPPENED?!?"
-This was the first (and only other) extra-inning walk-off since End of Summer Classic V in August 2005 when Tom Huie--the Francisco Cabrera of our league--hit a walk-off single to left, scoring Will Lane.
-Other similarities between this game and ESC V:
-Roger, Christos and Cruzer were on the losing team in both games.
-Wilson pitched a 10-inning complete game on both days.
-Jill was in attendance for both games (she played in this game).
-No, seriously, we played baseball in November!
-In 4 1/3 innings, Jay Cruzer walked more batters (3) than in his previous two outings combined (17 innings--2 walks).
-The game almost ended in the bottom of the 9th when, with the bases loaded, Ben hit a sharp grounder to 3rd that was fielded by Christos who then threw home for the "out," barely "edging" Wilson "out" at home. Not wanting to Benny Rule a walk-off win (heretofore known as the "Willy Rule"), Sweet November played on without much argument.
-Post-game quote from Like a P6's catcher: "Oh yeah, he was definitely safe."
-Post-game quote from Like a P6's third baseman: "Yeah, he was probably safe. What?"
-Post-game quote from Like a P6's pitcher: "Yeah, he was safe."
-League stalwart Bryan Harris, batting 5th for Like a P6, popped up to his best friend in the whole wide world, Alvin, FOUR times (1st, 5th, 6th, and 8th innings). The last two times were particular humorous as Alvin called the popups before they happened and, on one occasion, Wilson fell to the ground laughing as soon as the ball went up. What a dick.
-Losing sunlight became a potential issue late in the game for the first time since that time we played baseball on the moon. [citation needed]
-Wilson loves Jason Blair and he doesn't care who knows it.
-We had a shortage of baseballs in this game as we were down to a rotation of two balls despite several splashdowns in the visitor's on-deck circle. Let's uhh, get on that.
-We had six (6) players make their debut in this game: Albert, Erin and Val for Like a P6, and Ben, Emmanuel and Joe for Sweet November.
-We only played so that someone could have the nickname "Mr. November" bestowed upon them. Alvin (Mr. October) dubbed Wilson "Mr. November" due to his 10-inning CG and passing the NY bar exam.
-This game featured the most females (Erin, Vicki, Jill) since the last time that Alejandro and Mike played in the same game.
-Tiffany and Nadia graced us not only with their presence, but with some delicious whiskey cider as well.
-Joe M affectionately dubbed the last three hitters in Sweet November's lineup Vajajay (Vicki-Jill-Joe). Hilarity ensued.
-We had a late start time (almost 2:00pm) and an extremely late end time (almost 6:00pm). Still, the after-party was TRE-MENDOUS.
-This game would NOT have happened without the tireless efforts of Wilson and Cruzer (among others) who called, texted and messaged several people well into Friday afternoon to assure full teams, thus foiling...ok, well Alejandro the Baseball Terrorist didn't need to be foiled this week...but fuck Baseball Terrorism!
-Sweet November stranded a moderately-sized village on base, fourteen (14) runners in all, at least one in every inning but the 8th--the lone 1-2-3 inning in the game--including the bases loaded twice.
-Not to be outdone, Like a P6 stranded a small town on base, NINETEEN (19!) runners in all, at least one in every inning including the bases loaded twice (including the top of the 10th).
-For realsies, we played BASEBALL in NOVEMBER!
-Before the game, Cruzer called Wilson to inform him that a high school football game was taking place on the field, goal posts and all. After several minutes of doing nothing to remedy the situation, Wilson was informed that the game had ended and the field was being cleared. He would remark to Cruzer, "Hooray for doing nothing!"
-There were three (3) plays at the plate in this game: Paul was thrown out in the top of the 7th, Wilson was forced out in the bottom of the 9th and Albert was forced out in the top of the 10th.
-New nicknames were John B, courtesy of Roger: Bunt-neta, RBI-neta, Popup-eta, Flyout-to-left-eta, HBP-neta.
-John B also KNOCKED DOWN A TREE (Ok fine, the bracing stake next to the tree) running for a pop up in foul territory.
-Only four (4) of Sweet November's thirty (30) recorded outs came via strikeout. Eleven outs came via groundout, eight came via popup, five via fly ball, one via line drive and one via play at the plate.
-If we can play in again in November...or in December (!), I would cream my Under Armour compression shorts.
- Paul: Ball two!
John B: I love that movie!
Paul: No, I didn't say Air Bud 2.
John B: Oh...
