'Things to Note While Chris Writes His Name on Wendy For the First Time...'
-For the second year in a row, the Townsville Mojojojoes are champions of the End of the Summer Classic. This is the first time that Townsville has won in consecutive years since their back-to-back triumphs in ESC III and ESC IV.
-The game was played in memory of Mark's father, Donald A. Rubin, who passed away earlier this summer. Mark had a tremendous day in his honor, going 3-for-4 with a double and 3 runs batted in.
-This marked the first time that Christos Plakas was on the winning squad since the victorious Townsville team of ESC IV. Despite an arguably deserved reputation to the contrary, Christos nailed down the victory in the 9th without allowing a run much like he did in Townsville's victory in 2003.
-"And what happened then? Well in Townsville they say, that the Greek's small heart grew three sizes that day."
-The game was remarkably close through six innings before GAS was felled by an abundance of walks and errors.
-To wit, both teams displayed some sloppy play in the final 3 innings, combining for 5 errors that led to 4 unearned runs.
-Players who popped their ESC cherry: Jason, Justin and Adam.
-Players who popped their ESC champion cherry: Sergio and Adam.
-Players who popped their Townsville cherries: Sergio, Adam, Jose C and Pepe.
-Players who popped their GAS cherries: Jose L, Jason and Justin.
-Brian Mangan lost an ESC for the first time in the Wendy era (2006-present).
-Sepulveda turned 2 excellent double plays, one a hot shot from CJ and another on a line drive from Pepe. They happened in the first and second inning, respectively.
-Townsville executed a multi-relay play to throw out Wilson trying to stretch a triple into a homerun. Christos threw to Sergio at home who easily tagged out the bewildered and mildly out of shape Wilson. After several high-fives, Wilson proceeded to repeatedly yell "SHIT, SHIT, SHIT" at no one in particular.
-Several seconds later, Justin's 3 year old daughter shouted "SHIT, SHIT, SHIT" at no one in particular.
-Pepe came through and brought his DJ speakers and his dad's Bomb Shelter|bomb shelter generator to power them. The sound was phenomenal though!
-Prior to the game, Flynn played a much improved version of the national anthem on his trumpet.
-I'm fairly certain Christos smiled at least twice.
-Bryan Harris, recovering from having his vagina removed and a penis installed in its stead (hereby known as a Harrisectomy), valiantly umpired for both teams. He joins the renowned ESCUA (ESC Umpires' Association); its members include Mike Stern, Brian Mangan, Jimmy's dad, some dude named Mike, some dude named Francis, Chris Rodriguez, Vicki Siesta, and some other dude named Chris. Exalted company, indeed.
-Matt Waldron took a fuckton of pictures for us. You can view them on his facebook page or by clicking on any of the hundreds of pictures in which we're tagged.
-Flynn, calling his wife after the game: "Worst 100 Ways to Deliver Bad News|I have bad news - we only won by four runs this time."
-CJ Medina returned to remind us of his awesomeness, eight days after getting married. He also brought back Bob Sheppard from the dead.
-At the postgame dinner at Wendy's, Mark accused Roger of not being original or creative in deciding to start CJ. A minute or so later, Mark hit his head on an overhead light fixture for the 85th time.
-The after-party was excellent; you totally should have been there.
-Townsville collected on their collective wagers in a variety of ways: Brian had to be Jose C's beer caddy and Sepulveda had to wear Spain's flag as a cape at the after-party. As a result of their "mayor's bet", Wilson had to wear a Townsville jersey at the after-party, cede control of his Facebook status to Roger for one week and having his profile picture be of Wilson in said Townsville jersey.
-Gambling is fun!
-Christos, barely hiding a smirk, said at the after-party that the win, "Isn't that big of a deal." Earlier he had complained that Townsville scored too many runs in the 8th, costing him a save opportunity. Psychologists refer to this as "Christos being Christos."
-The date for ESC X was confirmed on Sunday, August 15, a mere 13 days before the game.
-From the 5/22 game recap: "There was continued discussion of when ESC X: Do the Right Thing will take place. Leading at the moment is Saturday, August 28th. Discussion will continue..."
-Townsville's "Future Press Conference" video was eerily prescient as Sergio reported GAS' time of death as 5:31 pm. The game ended at 5:28 pm.
-No word on whether Brian actually shit his pants.
-All the ESC promo videos are still viewable on the ESC X event page and at http://www.youtube.com/ESCNetwork
-Justin took home the golden sombrero by striking out four times, three of them looking.
-He also took home Sergio's sister.
-If anyone has additional game notes, interesting things to say, please add them in the comments or via email and I'll edit them in for posterity before they're posted on the Peck Blog and ESC wiki.
